Chapupu Salary Advance

Salary advance loans in Zimbabwe

The Chapupu Salary Advance is Alector Microfinance’s salary-backed loan for employed Zimbabweans. It is built for the gap most households actually face — a bill, a medical cost or a school payment that lands before the salary does.

Overview

About the Chapupu Salary Advance

Because repayment is anchored to a verifiable monthly income, Chapupu carries the lowest published rate of any Alector product, starting at 10%.

Who this is for

  • Salaried employees in the public or private sector
  • Anyone paid on a predictable monthly cycle
  • Borrowers who want the shortest, cheapest facility we publish
  • First-time borrowers with a payslip but no formal credit history

How it works

What to expect

  1. 01

    Your income sets your limit

We size the advance against your verified monthly net pay, so the installment stays affordable rather than maximising what you can be lent.

  2. 02

A fixed schedule, issued up front

Every installment, its date and its amount appear on your schedule before you accept. The rate on your agreement does not change for the life of the loan.

  3. 03

    Repay however suits you

By bank transfer or in cash at our Harare office. Payments settle against your oldest unpaid installment first and reflect on your schedule immediately.

  4. 04

Repaying on time raises your ceiling

Each settled installment feeds your Alector trust score. As it rises you move through bronze, silver and gold tiers, and your limit grows with it.

In practice

When this loan is the right choice

Illustrative situations, not real customers. They are here because the useful question is rarely “what is the rate” — it is “is this the right instrument for what I am actually trying to do”.

A medical bill two weeks before payday

A hospital admission for a dependant produces a bill that must be settled before discharge. The money exists — it simply arrives on the 25th, and the bill is due on the 11th.

What we would suggest: This is the textbook case for a salary advance: a genuine timing gap, not a shortfall. A one-month term is usually enough, and the shortest term keeps the cost of credit to a minimum.

School fees across three terms

Fees for two children fall due three times a year. Each invoice is affordable against a monthly salary; all of it at once is not.

What we would suggest: Borrow the invoice amount, not a round number, and match the term to the school term so the balance clears before the next invoice arrives. Bring the invoice to your application so the loan is sized to what is actually owed.

Relocating for a new job

A new post starts next month and requires a deposit, transport and the first month of rent — before the first salary from that employer arrives.

What we would suggest: Worth noting: Chapupu requires at least three months with your current employer. If you have just changed jobs, apply before you move, or start with the Alector Starter Loan and build a record.

Avoid these

Common mistakes

Several of these cost us margin to tell you. They are here because a borrower who takes the right facility repays it, and a borrower who takes the wrong one does not.

  • Borrowing the limit rather than the need

Being approved for $1,500 is not a recommendation to take $1,500. Every extra dollar carries interest for the full term. Borrow the number on the bill.

  • Choosing the longest term by reflex

A three-month term produces a smaller instalment than one month — and generally costs more overall. Pick the shortest term you can comfortably service, not the smallest instalment.

  • Using a salary advance for business stock

If the money funds trading rather than a household need, Mbizi Working Capital is assessed on your trading cycle and runs to six months. Forcing business borrowing into a three-month salary product creates an instalment the trade cannot yet support.

  • Waiting until the due date to tell us about a problem

A schedule that has not yet been breached can be discussed. One already in arrears is much harder to unwind, and it pauses further borrowing until settled.

Honest routing

When a different product suits you better

Sending someone to the wrong facility helps nobody. If any of the following describes you, start there instead.

  • Your income comes from trading rather than a payslip, or the money is funding stock.Consider the Mbizi Working Capital instead
  • You have been with your employer under three months, or have no payslips to show yet.Consider the Alector Starter instead

FAQ

Salary advance loans in Zimbabwe: common questions

How much can I borrow against my salary?

The Chapupu Salary Advance runs from $50 to $1,500. Your own limit is set against your verified monthly net pay and your Alector trust score, and it is shown to you before you submit an application.

Do I need to have borrowed from Alector before?

No. Chapupu is available to new customers. You will need two recent payslips and proof that you have been with your current employer for at least three months.

How quickly is a salary advance approved?

Applications reach a loan officer immediately and most are reviewed the same working day. Your repayment schedule is generated the moment the loan is disbursed.

What happens if I leave my job during the loan?

Tell us as soon as you know. The balance remains payable, but we would rather restructure the schedule with you early than let installments fall overdue, which pauses any further borrowing.

Instalment
One scheduled payment out of the series that repays a loan.
Repayment schedule
The document listing every instalment you owe, its exact amount and its due date.
Affordability assessment
A lender checking that the instalment fits your income — not merely that you could theoretically pay it.
Early settlement
Repaying some or all of a loan ahead of schedule, which reduces what you carry.
Arrears
Money that is overdue — an instalment whose due date has passed without full payment.
